This cottagecore styled engagement session in Kalamazoo Michigan was a happenstance of the ages. Candy and Jacob’s engagement session began at Al Sabo in Kalamazoo, Michigan on a warm Spring day in May. Candy loves to sew, create and make clothes for various events such as Cosplay and plays. She made mention of making one of her outfits for their engagement session but little did I know. This outfit took my breath away and she truly outdid herself with this skirt.
How to Photograph Cottagecore Styled Engagement Photos
The storytelling aspect of the photoshoot brings everything together but it wouldn’t be a full picture without Candy’s personal style. As Candy and Jacob walked away from me, I photographed off to the side while having her look back. Before our session, I created a moodboard to give us a better feel for Candy and Jacob’s connection. Creating a mood board is key to developing a storyline that flows with the clients love story. This helps us visualize their connection before we get to see it during the session. I typically send clients my personal mood board for Sol Luna to give them an idea of what I’m looking for. The day was super overcast which added a little mood to the session too. The cottagecore styled engagement session in Kalamazoo Michigan needed a little extra flair. During the shoot, I added a little sandwich baggie around my lens as a tool to help create dreamy photographs.
Prompting during the session is also a key component in creating cottagecore styled photographs. With whimsy in mind, we played off of fantasy for most of the photos. Creating movie like scenes with every prompt. Building scenes during your session is a piece of storytelling that helps clients feel comfortable and connected.
